Resolution Reboot: How to Reignite Your Motivation
New Year's resolutions are a great way to set intentions for the upcoming year and make positive changes in our lives, but it can be all too easy to lose motivation and give up on our resolutions as the year goes on. Sound familiar? Don’t despair! Just because we're a few weeks into the New Year doesn't mean you can't recommit to your goals. Remember: every day is a chance to try again.
If you’ve lost that New Year’s momentum, take a moment to reflect on why you stopped pursuing your resolution:
Was it unrealistic or too difficult to maintain?
Maybe it wasn’t specific enough, which made it hard to work towards.
Or perhaps life just got in the way.
Whatever the reason, it’s never too late to reignite your motivation and achieve your goals. Here are some strategies and tips to keep you motivated and on track:
1. Be Specific.
The more precise your resolution is, the more likely you are to achieve it. Clear goals provide focus and motivation, as they give a sense of purpose and direction.
Instead of resolving to “walk more”, set a specific goal, such as “take a 30 minute walk 3 times a week.” Instead of “read more,” try “read one book a month.” Specific goals are also more measurable, which makes it easier to track your progress.
2. Make a plan...
Break your resolution down into smaller, more manageable goals, and create a clear plan for how you’ll achieve them.
Start simple. If you want to take up an old hobby, your first goal can be to get your supplies out of storage. Or maybe getting a new library card is your first step. Once you’ve taken the initial step, make a plan and schedule specific actions such as setting aside time each day for reading or signing up for art classes to help you stay on track.
3. ... But stay flexible.
Life happens, and things change. Stay positive, and be willing to adjust your resolution or goals as needed.
Setbacks are a normal part of the process, so don't let them discourage you. If you do slip up, don't be too hard on yourself. Focusing on the reason why you set the resolution in the first place can help you get back on track.
4. Reward yourself.
Don't underestimate the power of positive reinforcement! Give yourself something to look forward to when you reach milestones or achieve your goal. Celebrating each accomplishment, no matter how small, can help keep you motivated.
For smaller goals, you could treat yourself to a meal at your favorite restaurant. For bigger milestones, you could reward yourself with something like an accessory you've been wanting as a way to acknowledge and celebrate your commitment and progress towards your resolution.
Don't give up on your New Year's resolutions, even if you've fallen behind. Patience, persistence, and adaptability are key to success. With determination and a plan in place, you can still reach your goals and make this year a great one.
