Snowboard Boots Put Different Demands on Your Feet Than Walking Does
Even expensive snowboard boots often come with the same thin, flat factory insole you'd find in any shoe — which is a strange mismatch, because what your feet are actually doing on a board is nothing like walking or running.
Why Snowboarding Is a Different Problem
When you're carving a turn, you're shifting your weight through your boots to steer the board — leaning through toe-side and heel-side edges, often with your knees bent in a stance you'd never hold while walking. That's a sustained, angled loading pattern, not the repeated heel-strike-to-push-off cycle most foot mechanics advice (including most of what we write here) is built around.
That difference matters. It also means a symmetric, flat footbed — the kind that ships in most boots — gives your foot no stable, neutral reference point to push against while you're leaning hard into an edge. Your foot can roll excessively inward (overpronation) or outward (oversupination) under that sustained lateral load, and either one reduces how efficiently your input actually reaches the edge of the board — with a real risk of fatigue or injury if it happens turn after turn, run after run.
What This Isn't About "Correcting"
Rolling somewhat inward or outward under load isn't a flaw to eliminate — some degree of it is normal foot mechanics. The issue in a stiff, unyielding boot is the same one we describe elsewhere: without something to actively stabilize that rotation, a flat, symmetric footbed does nothing to keep it in a reasonable range, and a full day of runs means a full day of that unaddressed motion.

What a Snowboard Insert Actually Needs to Do
Two things matter more here than in an everyday shoe:
- A stable, neutral base under lateral load — not a soft, compressible one. Cushioning that packs down under sustained edge pressure doesn't give your foot anything firm to push against.
- Room in the boot — a bulky insert changes boot fit and can throw off your board feel entirely, which matters more in a performance sport than in daily footwear.
Why We Point People Toward the T-100
Landing Gear's heel cup is shaped to match the subtalar joint's actual diagonal axis — the same structural fact that governs how your foot rotates under any load-bearing demand, walking or otherwise. The independent 3D motion capture data we cite elsewhere (28 of 31 people landing with correct heel rotation in the M-100, versus 3 of 31 in standard foam) was measured during walking gait specifically — we haven't seen dedicated snowboarding-stance data, and we're not going to claim we have. What we can say is that the same underlying joint geometry the study measured doesn't stop mattering just because you're standing at an angle instead of walking.
For snowboard boots specifically, though, fit comes first: boots are built snug by design, with far less internal volume than a sneaker or work boot. The T-100's thinner profile is what actually fits inside most snowboard boots without crowding your foot or changing your board feel — the M-100's added structure often just won't leave room in a boot this tight.
If You're Buying New Boots
If you're in the market for new boots anyway, consider sizing up slightly and fitting the M-100 instead — the extra room can make space for the more structured option, which you may prefer if it fits. Either way, the safest approach is to bring both the M-100 and the T-100 with you to a shop and try them in the actual boots you're considering before buying, rather than guessing. If you'd rather order online, that's fine too — just know which one you're more likely to need based on your current boot's fit.
