Kids Are Walking on the Same Flat Ground We Are

Chris, one of our founders, noticed it in his own house. His son Christian was six years old — and he mostly wanted to sit down. After school, instead of running around outside, he'd rather rest. Chris asked him gently if his back hurt. Christian admitted it did.

A visit to a physical therapist and a pair of inserts later, everything changed. Christian didn't love wearing them at first — they were clunky — but two weeks in, he came home from school and said he'd gone from third to first in his class's running times. Today, Christian is in college playing lacrosse.

The Ground Doesn't Get Softer for Smaller Feet

Kids run, jump, and play on exactly the same surfaces adults spend all day standing on — sidewalks, gym floors, playground concrete, classroom tile. The only difference is they do it faster, longer, and with more motion per pound of body weight than most adults ever will again.

The human foot evolved to move across variable, forgiving terrain — packed dirt, sand, grass, ground that gives slightly with every step. Modern surfaces don't give at all, and that mismatch doesn't wait for adulthood to start. It's there the moment a child starts walking on pavement instead of a yard.

This was never about something being wrong with Christian's feet. It's the same idea behind everything we build: the floor is the problem, not the foot.

Why Paying Attention Early Matters

A child's foot is still developing the mechanics it will use for the rest of their life — how the heel lands, how the joint below the ankle settles into the pattern it will run on for decades. That process doesn't pause just because the surface underneath is unnatural. Every step on a hard, flat floor is still a step, whether it's a first-grader on a playground or a teenager running track.

Giving that developing foot better ground geometry earlier is the same logic as making sure a growing kid has shoes that actually fit — it's meeting a real, ongoing mechanical need, at the stage where it's easiest to make a difference.

Here's the plain version of what that actually means: a heel doesn't land straight down or straight sideways — it twists on a diagonal, the way a screw turns rather than a door swings. A flat insole, or the flat inside of a regular shoe, doesn't do anything with that twist — it's just a flat surface underneath a foot that's trying to rotate. Landing Gear's heel cup is shaped to match that diagonal twist instead, so a developing foot has something to actually turn against with every step, not just a flat pad to land on.

In independent 3D motion capture testing (BioMechanica LLC, Dr. Martyn Shorten, 2019, n=31), 28 of 31 people landed with their heel rotating correctly in Landing Gear's M-100, compared to far fewer in standard foam. That's the same shape and the same measured difference behind Christian's story — not a guess about what might help, but a specific, testable reason why the shape under the heel matters.

Built to Keep Up With Growing Feet

There's also a practical reason this matters for parents: kids' feet grow fast, and shoes don't keep up. A pair that fits perfectly in the fall can be tight by spring. That's where the T-75 and M-75 come in — built with enough range to move with your child across roughly two shoe sizes, so you're not replacing a set of Landing Gear every time you replace a pair of sneakers.
