Foot Overpronation

Overpronation Isn't a Flaw. It's Normal Motion, Overwhelmed.
Overpronation gets talked about like a malfunction — something wrong with your foot that needs fixing. It's worth starting somewhere different: pronation itself isn't the problem. It's a normal, necessary part of how every foot moves.
What's Actually Happening
Pronation is the inward roll of the foot that happens naturally as your heel makes contact and your weight moves forward — it's part of how your foot absorbs impact and adapts to the ground. "Overpronation" describes that roll going further than it should, to the point where the arch flattens toward the ground and more of the sole makes contact than usual. You can feel a rough version of this by rolling your ankles inward — you'll notice the change isn't just in your foot, it runs up through your whole stance.
That whole-body connection is real: when the foot rolls further than intended, the load that should be distributed across the foot's normal structures shifts onto areas not built to carry it, and that imbalance can travel up through the ankle, knee, and even the lower back.
Why "Correcting" It Misses the Point
Older thinking treated pronation as something to restrict — brace it, stop the roll, hold the foot rigid. Here's the problem: pronation isn't a defect. It's the mechanism your foot uses to adapt to the ground at all. The actual question isn't "how do we stop this motion" — it's "why is this motion going further than it should." The answer is usually the same one behind most of what we write about here: the subtalar joint, the hinge just below your ankle, is built to rotate on a diagonal path and stop at a certain point when it's working with terrain that gives it the right cues. Flat, hard, modern ground doesn't give it those cues. Without them, the roll can continue further than it's meant to, which is what shows up as overpronation.
What Actually Helps
If you're dealing with pain that you think is connected to overpronation — in your feet, knees, or back — a doctor or podiatrist is the right place to start, since it's worth ruling out other causes of similar pain first.
For the mechanical piece, the goal isn't to block the roll — it's to give the joint the geometry it needs so the roll happens the right amount, not too little and not too much. Landing Gear's heel cup is shaped to match the subtalar joint's actual diagonal rotation, giving it something to work with instead of leaving it to overshoot on flat ground. In independent 3D motion capture testing (BioMechanica LLC, Dr. Martyn Shorten, 2019, n=31), 28 of 31 people landed with their heel rotating correctly in Landing Gear's M-100, compared to just 3 of 31 in standard foam.
Pronation isn't the enemy. Ground that gives your foot nothing to work with is.
