Why Your Insole Keeps Sliding Around (and What Actually Stops It)

You put an insert in your shoe, and within a day it's bunched up at your toes or crept out from under your heel. It's one of the most common complaints with aftermarket inserts — and most of the advice out there treats it as a fit problem, when it's often a shape problem.

Two Different Problems, Often Confused

"My insole keeps sliding" usually means one of two different things, and they have different causes:

  1. Your foot moves around inside the insert as you walk — a comfort and stability issue at the foot-to-insert interface.
  2. The whole insert shifts inside your shoe — bunching at the toe, creeping out from under the heel — a completely different problem, at the insert-to-shoe interface.

The "deep heel cup" marketing claim you'll see on most inserts is aimed at problem #1, and even there it doesn't fully deliver: a deep but symmetric cup still gives your heel room to twist around inside it, since your heel doesn't sit still — it rotates on a diagonal with every step, and a round, evenly-curved bowl doesn't match that motion.

But problem #2 — the actual "my insole keeps migrating" complaint most people searching this topic have — isn't a heel-shape problem at all. It's driven by how much grip the insert's underside has against the shoe's interior, how much room the insert has to move (sizing), and the repeated forward push you put on it with every step, which over a full day can walk an insert toward the toe box regardless of how well-shaped its heel cup is.

Get the Fit Right First

Before anything else, size matters. An insert that's too big will bunch up; one that's too small will slide. If yours is slightly oversized, trimming it to match your shoe's actual footprint is a normal, safe adjustment — it won't damage the insert or affect a return.

If You Need Extra Hold

For most well-fitted inserts, extra adhesive shouldn't be necessary. If you're using an insert that still shifts after a proper fit:

  • Removable tape or Velcro strips between the insert and the shoe's sole give a secure, non-permanent hold — press firmly along the heel area for the most stability.
  • A flexible, repositionable adhesive (not a rigid one) works better than something permanent, since it won't tear the material or make the insert impossible to remove later.
  • Avoid super glue or heavy-duty adhesives — they can damage the shoe and make it difficult to ever swap the insert out.
  • Don't use thumbtacks or anything sharp. It's a real suggestion that circulates online, and it's not worth the risk to your foot or the shoe.

What Actually Keeps Landing Gear in Place

For problem #1 — your foot moving around inside the insert — Landing Gear's heel cup is shaped asymmetrically, contoured to the same diagonal path your heel naturally rotates through. Your heel settles into that shape instead of searching for a resting position inside a generic symmetric bowl.

For problem #2 — the insert actually staying anchored inside your shoe — that comes down to a textured, grippy underside material designed to resist sliding against the shoe's interior, combined with getting the sizing right so the insert isn't shifting around in extra space it doesn't need. That's a separate feature solving a separate problem, not a side effect of the heel shape.
