Why "Flat Feet" Struggle Most on Flat Ground

If you've ever been told you have flat feet, you've probably also been told that something is wrong with your arch. That's the wrong villain. The real problem isn't your foot — it's the ground.

What "Flat Feet" Actually Means

A foot is called flat when the arch sits low enough that most or all of the sole makes contact with the ground. For some people this is simply how their foot is built. For others, the arch changes shape over time — a shift that can show up with age, with added body weight, or after an injury changes how the foot loads with each step.

Either way, the mechanism is the same: the subtalar joint, the hinge that lets your foot roll and adapt to uneven terrain, doesn't have anywhere to go. On natural ground — sand, trail, uneven dirt — that joint is doing what it evolved to do. On a flat, hard, man-made surface, it has nothing to work with. That mismatch, not the shape of the arch itself, is where the strain comes from.

What Flat Feet Feel Like

People with a low or collapsed arch report a wide range of experiences — some feel nothing at all, others notice fatigue or discomfort that can show up not just in the foot but up the chain, in the ankles, knees, or lower back. That's because when the arch can't do its job of managing how the foot rolls, the rest of the leg has to compensate. Over a long enough day — on your feet at work, on a run, standing on concrete — that compensation adds up.

The Ground Is the Real Problem

Every shoe insert on the market is designed around the same old idea: prop up the arch, and you've solved the problem. That's the paradigm we walked away from — and it's worth understanding why arch support specifically falls short: the arch sits too close to the subtalar joint's axis to have any real leverage over it, while the heel sits far enough away to actually influence how the joint rotates. (The full lever-arm breakdown is here →) Our engineering starts from the geometry of the subtalar joint itself — the 42°/16° axis first mapped by Manter in 1941 — which shows that a joint built to move at an angle simply cannot resolve flat ground by sitting still. No amount of propping changes that math.

Here's the plain version of what that means: your heel doesn't rotate in one simple direction when it lands — it twists on a diagonal, two ways at once, more like a screw thread than a see-saw. A flat arch support doesn't address that at all; it just fills space under the middle of your foot while the heel is still landing on a flat, unshaped surface. Landing Gear's heel cup is shaped differently — molded to match that actual diagonal twist, right where the foot first hits the ground, and built to guide the whole step through to push-off rather than just cushioning one moment of impact.

In independent 3D motion capture testing (BioMechanica LLC, Dr. Martyn Shorten, 2019, n=31), 28 of 31 people landed with their heel rotating inside the correct range wearing Landing Gear's M-100, compared to far fewer in standard foam. Same feet, same shoes, same floor — the only thing that changed was the shape under the heel.

The Bottom Line

A low or flat arch isn't a defect to be propped up — it's a foot doing exactly what it should on ground that was never built for it.
