Fallen Arches: Same Foot, Different Name, Same Root Cause

"Fallen arches" and "flat feet" often get treated as two different things, but they're describing the same underlying situation, just from different angles. A flat foot may have always been shaped that way; a fallen arch usually describes one that used to have more of a curve and doesn't anymore. Either way, the result is the same: little to no gap between the ground and the inside of your foot when you're standing.

What Actually Changes an Arch

The arch is held in its shape by tension in the tendons running through your foot. When that tension changes — through injury, pregnancy-related hormonal changes, added body weight, or simply the accumulated effect of years of use — the arch can lower or flatten. If you think this is happening to you, a doctor or podiatrist is the right first step, since several different conditions (including plantar fasciitis) can produce similar pain and are worth ruling in or out properly.

The Part That Gets Missed

Most explanations of fallen arches stop at "the tendons lost their tension" and move straight to treatment. But that skips the more useful question: why is a structure built to be a passive shape-holder losing that shape in the first place?

The arch isn't really a load-bearing stabilizer on its own — the actual rotational control of your foot belongs to the subtalar joint, the hinge just below your ankle, built to rotate on a diagonal path with each step and adapt to whatever ground it lands on. On flat, hard, modern ground, that joint has nothing to rotate against. The rotation it should be handling gets redistributed onto nearby tissue instead — often the same tendons and fascia responsible for holding your arch's shape. Ask those structures to do that job, every day, for years, on top of their own job, and the shape they're meant to hold starts to give.

That's the same mechanism behind plantar fasciitis and a lot of general foot fatigue — different symptom, same root cause.

Why "Just Add Arch Support" Isn't the Full Answer

The instinct to prop up a lowered arch with cushioned support makes intuitive sense — it's protecting a structure that seems to be failing. But propping up the arch doesn't address why it lost its shape. The subtalar joint still has nothing to rotate against; the tendons are still being asked to do a job they weren't built for. You've cushioned the symptom without touching the cause.

What Actually Addresses the Cause

Landing Gear's heel cup is shaped to match the subtalar joint's actual diagonal rotation — restoring what flat ground takes away, so the joint can do its own job instead of handing the work off to your arch's tendons. In independent 3D motion capture testing (BioMechanica LLC, Dr. Martyn Shorten, 2019, n=31), 28 of 31 people landed with their heel rotating correctly in Landing Gear's M-100, compared to just 3 of 31 in standard foam.

If your fallen arches are connected to pregnancy or added body weight, those underlying factors are worth discussing with your doctor as part of your overall care — a shoe insert doesn't change either of those, and isn't meant to. What it can do is address the ground-level mechanical piece that's part of the picture regardless of what else is contributing to it.
