Why Your Achilles Ends Up Doing the Wrong Job
You start a new training block, push the pace a little sooner than you should have, and a few days in — there it is. A tight, aching pull in the back of the leg, right above the heel. It's one of the most common ways people get introduced to their Achilles tendon: not by thinking about it, but by feeling it. It doesn't just happen to runners — anyone spending real time on hard, flat ground can end up here.
One Mechanism, Many Symptoms
Here's the part that usually gets left out of the "you trained too hard, too fast" explanation: the Achilles tendon's job is to transmit force efficiently through a normally-sequenced push-off. That's its primary role. It was never built to be a stabilizer.
But stabilizing rotation is exactly what it gets asked to do when the joint whose actual job that is — the subtalar joint, just below your ankle — doesn't have anywhere to rotate into. On natural, variable terrain, that joint absorbs and redirects load with every step, the way it's built to. On flat, hard, man-made ground — pavement, a track, a treadmill belt over concrete — it has nothing to work with. The rotation that should have happened there doesn't disappear. It gets pushed onto the nearest available tissue instead.
For a lot of people, that tissue is the Achilles. It ends up managing abnormal loading angles instead of doing the one thing it was built to do: transmit force cleanly. Ask a tendon to do a job it wasn't designed for, over and over, under load, and this is often where it shows up.
Training Load Is Still Part of the Story
None of this erases the basics. Ramping up mileage or intensity too fast, skipping a warmup, skipping strength work — these still matter, and if you've just started to feel pain, backing off high-impact activity and giving the tendon time is still the right first move. If it doesn't improve, that's a conversation for a doctor or physical therapist, not a blog post — diagnosing and treating an actual injury isn't something we're going to walk you through here.
The Other Half of the Equation
Here's the part training advice alone won't fix: your heel doesn't rotate straight up-and-down or side-to-side when it lands — it twists on a diagonal, two directions at once, more like a screw thread than a simple tilt. A flat surface — flat ground, a flat insole, the flat inside of a running shoe — doesn't know that and doesn't accommodate it. It just gives your heel one flat spot to land on, for the whole step, and your foot has to compensate for the missing angle somewhere. Often, that "somewhere" is the Achilles.
Landing Gear's heel cup is shaped to match that actual diagonal path, guiding your foot through the full step — heel strike, midstance, push-off — instead of just a flat landing pad. In independent 3D motion capture testing, that difference showed up directly: about 1 in 10 people landed with their heel rotating correctly in standard cushioned foam, compared to roughly 9 in 10 in Landing Gear's M-100. Same feet, same running form, same ground — the only thing that changed was the shape under the heel.
That's not a claim that Landing Gear treats or cures Achilles strain. It's a measured difference in what the joint actually does at the moment of landing, which is the same moment that determines how much gets pushed downstream onto the tendon.
The Bottom Line
An overused tendon doing a stabilizer's job it was never built for, on ground that gives it nothing to rotate into, is the same story behind plantar fasciitis, flat-foot pain, and general foot fatigue — same root cause, different tissue absorbing it. Training smart still matters. So does the shape of what's under your heel while you do it.
