Why do kids need insoles?

Kids can experience overpronation and supination of the ankle just as much as an adult can. This can impact their ability to walk, run, and participate in sports. In order for a child to maintain proper alignment as they develop, it is important to make sure that their footwear is supportive and offers the structure they need. Many shoes made for children have a flat factory insole with very little support. Adding an after-factory insole can correct this.

Do kids need arch support for their feet?

All people need proper arch support in their shoes. For kids who need additional arch support because of low arches or flat feet, many kids find that custom orthotics are too stiff to allow them to participate in sports. Adding insoles has been shown to significantly improve the outcome for children with flat feet. However, a doctor will be the best person to determine the level of support your child needs.

Can you replace insoles?

Yes. In fact, most shoes made for kids have an easily removable insole that will slip out with a gentle tug. If the insole comes out easily, it can be replaced with a full-length after-factory insole. If the insole is glued in tightly, a partial insole can be used over the one in the shoe. As the new insoles wear out, they will need to be changed with a replacement insole to keep the level of support you need.

What kinds of kid's shoes need insoles?

While there are a few brands out there who take your child's development into consideration, most just add a flat, cheaply-made insole to their shoes. If you look in your child's shoe and see a flat insole or an insole with very little contour, there is a good chance they aren't providing proper support and they need replacement insoles. Does my child need insoles?

If your child is experiencing foot pain it is best that they visit their doctor for an evaluation to make sure there is not an acute injury causing the pain.
